With the sale of our first set of kids on the farm, we are able to start using Remi's milk for uses other than feeding babies. As a First Freshener, which means that it is her first time producing milk, along with our first time milking the struggle of getting everyone comfortable with the process has required a learning period. We are finally getting into the swing of it after less than a week. I looked into several milking machines as milking multiple times a day is taxing on your hands and back but with the prices of the good ones and worrying about buying a small one off of the web, it can be scary especially when trying to not waste money. I found an off grid machine that I thought would be great other than the price tag but thanks to YouTube I found some DIY options for a fraction of the cost. Audrey and I tried it out this morning and we were able to get the most we have ever got and that was only from one side! To say that we were beyond excited is putting it mildly. Not only did we get the most milk that we have gotten but it took us less than half the time, which is good because it is hotter than blue blazes here but also because since Remi is new to milking her patience for milking is very short.
Today we also took our milk and pasteurized it, which is also a first for us. Who knew that it was so easy! It does take a little bit of time as you have to make sure you don't burn the milk and get it to the right temperature but easy none the less. We plan on making soaps, cheeses, butter, and having yummy milk to help supplement the cost at the grocery store. We can't wait to start offering our products to customers! Stay tuned to!
